Four-year-old Wang Yanxia was considered lucky and a gift to her family — for she was born in the wake of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Wenchuan, Sichuan, in 2008. But now her family is struggling to face the harsh truth that their daughter was killed in the Yaan quake.

The girl was hit by falling debris as she tried to rush out of the house when the 7.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Lushan county on Saturday. She died that day after immediately being taken to a Yaan hospital, news portal Cheng.cn reported on Wednesday.

At first we thought if she could manage to survive the [Wenchuan] earthquake, she would be blessed her entire life. But she did not escape the catastrophe after all,” her mother said, recalling how Yanxia loved drawing and dancing.

Wang Hongwu, the girl’s father, said he had to hide photos of Yanxia from his wife so they did not sadden her. The mother has been weeping every day since the tragedy. Scenes from five years ago of how Yanxia was safely delivered to them still remain vivid for Wang.

It was May 12, 2008, his wife's expected due date. But the operation was pushed back by a day because of the Sichuan disaster, which has claimed more than 88,000 lives. His wife give birth to Yanxia by caesarean, amid continual aftershocks.
