Product detail:
Seaweed has been used as food and medicine for centuries with several types, ranging from larger kelp to smaller varieties, more commonly used, particularly in Asian cuisine and those of coastal regions. Seaweed is typically available in dried form, and adds distinctive flavor and nutritional value to healthy dishes.
Radiation
A compound in seaweed, often prepared and used in dried form, might provide protection against radiation, according to a study published in the February 2008 issue of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies' journal "FEBS Letters." In the laboratory animal study, eckol, a tannin molecule, protected blood cells, repaired damaged DNA in immune cells and promoted immune cell growth and reproduction. The molecule also acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Similarly, a type of seaweed known as cyanobacteria may offer anti-inflammatory and antibiotic benefits, according to the University of California Medical Centers. The seaweed has been regarded as a nuisance and a threat to coral reefs in Hawaii.
Minerals
Seaweed is a rich source of highly absorbable minerals and is low in calories, making it an ideal food, especially for anyone on a weight-loss diet. Agar, a gel-like substance in seaweed, also promotes weight loss by making you feel full longer, according to Parragon Books' "100 Best Health Foods." However, a study published in the August 2010 issue of the journal "Obesity" found that alginate, a polysaccharide compound in brown algae, marketed as a weight-loss supplement, did not decrease appetite or increase satiety. Overweight or obese participants took the seaweed supplement 30 minutes before meals for 10 days.
Detoxification
Infuse your bath water with dried seaweed for a refreshing, therapeutic soak that feels like a visit to the seashore. Seaweeds detoxify the ocean and a seaweed bath can similarly help cleanse your body, according to naturopath Linda G. Rector-Page, author of the book "Healthy Healing: A Guide to Self-Healing for Everyone." Seaweed also replenishes minerals, such as iodine and potassium, as it draws water and impurities through your skin. Iodine in seaweed soaks might also aid weight loss by increasing thyroid hormone production. Seaweeds are high in vitamin K, which helps promote healthy adrenal function. When dissolved in water, seaweeds release a gel that coats your skin. After about 45 minutes the gel dissolves and signals that your therapeutic seaweed bath is complete.
