Gunungan is puppet in form of mount,symbolizing situation of the world along with its contents.In the puppet performance,a gunungan can also used for symbolize a palace,a jungle,fire or stone. The word Gunungan is taken from a word Gunung means a mountain or it is also usually called Kayon taken from the word Kayu or Hayat which means a tree or live.That’s why for the Westerns they call the Gunungan with The Tree Of Live. In other religion also has a same philosophy ,it is the Tri Hita Karana, which means the tree level of live ,Palemahan(the under world) Pawongan(the human’s live) and the Kayangan ( the God’s world).In the puppet show it is used also for a signal to switch a sceen to the next sceen. It is needed at least 3 Gunungan in a puppet show.
