From belian to bamboo, Sarawak rainforest produces more types of wood than anywhere else on earth. Native craftsmen have taken this living material and carved out their own niche in the art world. With so many types of wood to chose from is it any wonder that woodcarving is the most common art form in Sarawak? There are carvings everywhere, from door panels to ritual totem poles, from walking sticks to wall hangings. Even the rough notched logs that are ladders leading up to longhouses have heads carved at the top to protect the longhouse from evil influences. It was on such religious symbolism that Sarawak craftsmen perfected their woodcarving skills. .
